Necklace Length Chart: Inches, Centimeters and Where Each Falls
Standard necklace lengths from 14 to 36 inches, where each one falls on women and men, and how to measure yourself before you order.

In this guide
A necklace length chart turns a number on a product page into something you can actually picture: a 16-inch chain hugs the base of the neck, an 18-inch chain rests on the collarbone, a 30-inch chain falls well below the bust. Getting it right matters more than most people expect, because the same pendant can look delicate or lost depending on where it lands.
This necklace length guide gives you the standard sizes in inches and centimeters, shows where each one sits on women and on men, and explains how to measure yourself so you can order the right chain the first time.
Short answer: Standard necklace lengths are 14, 16, 18, 20, 22, 24, 30 and 36 inches (about 35, 40, 45, 50, 55, 60, 76 and 91 cm). On most women, 16 in sits at the base of the neck, 18 in on the collarbone, 24 in near the bust and 30 in or more below it. Most men wear 20 to 24 in.
Necklace length chart: standard sizes in inches and cm
Chains are sold in even-inch steps, and most jewelers use the same set of sizes. The table lists each standard length, its metric equivalent, its traditional name and where it usually falls on an average adult woman. Treat the last column as a starting point: your height, neck size and build move every length up or down a little.
| Length (in) | Length (cm) | Traditional name | Where it usually falls |
|---|---|---|---|
| 14 in | 35.6 cm | Choker (short) | High and close around the neck |
| 16 in | 40.6 cm | Choker | At the base of the neck |
| 18 in | 45.7 cm | Princess | On or just below the collarbone |
| 20 in | 50.8 cm | Matinee (short) | A little below the collarbone |
| 22 in | 55.9 cm | Matinee | Around a crew or scoop neckline |
| 24 in | 61 cm | Matinee (long) | At or just above the bust |
| 30 in | 76.2 cm | Opera | Below the bust |
| 36 in | 91.4 cm | Rope | Around the navel; can be doubled |
Two practical notes. European shops usually round metric sizes to 40, 45 or 50 cm, so a 45 cm chain and an 18-inch chain are effectively the same piece. And the length listed for a necklace is the chain measured end to end with the clasp; it does not include the drop of a pendant hanging from it.
Where necklace lengths fall on women
The traditional names come from pearl strands, but they apply to any chain. Here is what each group looks like when worn, and when it works best.
14 and 16 inches: chokers
A 14-inch chain sits high and close, which flatters open necklines and longer necks. At 16 inches it drops to the base of the neck: still a choker, but more comfortable for everyday wear. A fine piece such as our gold chain choker comes in 14, 16 and 18 inches, and the chokers collection adds collar and ring styles. On a larger neck, a 16-inch chain can fit as snugly as a 14-inch one, so check your neck measurement first.
18 inches: the everyday length
Eighteen inches is the most common length for women's necklaces. It rests on or just below the collarbone, frames the face and works with nearly every neckline. If you are buying a pendant as a gift and do not know the person's size, 18 inches is the safest choice.
20 to 24 inches: matinee lengths
Between 20 and 24 inches, a necklace moves from just below the collarbone to the top of the bust. These lengths sit well over crew necks and high necklines, and they give a pendant room to hang freely. Our silver chain necklace is offered from 16 to 24 inches, so you can choose the exact drop you want.

30 and 36 inches: opera and rope
At 30 inches a chain falls below the bust and lengthens the silhouette, especially over a plain knit or a simple dress. A 36-inch rope reaches around the navel and can be worn long, doubled into two strands or knotted. You will find these lengths among our long necklaces.
Necklace lengths for men
Men's chains run longer because necks and shoulders are usually wider, so the same number lands higher on a man than on a woman. A 20-inch chain that reaches the collarbone on one person can sit at the base of the neck on another.
- 18 in (45.7 cm): close to the base of the neck; suits slim necks and minimal looks.
- 20 in (50.8 cm): at the collarbone, the most popular length for a chain worn on its own.
- 22 in (55.9 cm): a few inches below the collarbone, visible with an open collar.
- 24 in (61 cm): mid-chest, the classic length for a pendant or a dog tag worn under a shirt.
- 30 in (76.2 cm): low on the chest, mostly for statement pendants worn over clothing.
Width changes the look as much as length. A wide chain reads heavier and is usually worn shorter, at 20 or 22 inches, while a fine chain can go longer without looking lost. Our men's Cuban link chain comes in 20, 22 and 24 inches, and the full range is in men's chains. For the difference between Cuban, figaro, rope and box links, read our guide to chain types.
How to measure your neck for the right length
A necklace size chart is only useful once you know your own starting point. All you need is a soft tape measure or a piece of string, a ruler and a mirror.
- Wrap the tape or string around the base of your neck, where a shirt collar would sit. Keep it snug but not tight.
- Read the measurement, or mark the string and measure it flat against a ruler.
- Add about 2 inches (5 cm) to find a chain length that sits comfortably at the base of the neck rather than pressing on it.
- For longer lengths, cut a piece of string to the length you are considering, hold the ends together at the back of your neck and look in the mirror. Note where it stops against your neckline.
The string test is the most reliable method because it accounts for your shoulders and chest, which a neck measurement alone does not. You can also measure a chain you already own and like: lay it flat, measure it end to end, and you have a personal reference to compare against any listing.
Choosing a length for your neckline and build
The best length is the one that lands on bare skin or sits deliberately over fabric, rather than fighting with the edge of your top.
Match the neckline
- Crew neck: a 16-inch choker that stays above the fabric, or 24 inches and longer worn over it.
- V-neck: a pendant on 18 or 20 inches that follows the V and stops above its point.
- Scoop neck: 16 to 18 inches, which echoes the curve.
- Strapless and off-the-shoulder: 14 to 18 inches to keep the focus on the neck and collarbones.
- Turtleneck: 24 to 36 inches worn over the knit.
- Open shirt collar: 18 to 22 inches, depending on how many buttons are undone.
Consider your height and build
On a petite frame, 16 to 20 inches usually stays in proportion, while a single long chain can add a sense of height. Taller people tend to carry 24 to 36 inches easily. With a fuller bust, a long chain rests on the chest instead of hanging straight, so choosing a length that stops above or clearly below the bust often looks cleaner. A shorter or wider neck makes every chain sit higher, so going up one size is a good rule of thumb. These are tendencies, not rules: the string test always has the final word.
Pendants, extenders and layering: a chain length guide
A pendant adds its own drop below the chain. An 18-inch chain carrying a pendant about an inch tall will visually end an inch lower, and a heavy pendant pulls the chain into a deeper V. When the pendant is the point, choose the chain so that the pendant, not the clasp line, lands where you want it.
An extender is a short length of chain, often around 2 inches (5 cm), added near the clasp so you can wear one necklace at two or three lengths. It is a simple way to fine-tune the fit, or to make a single chain work with different necklines.
When you wear several necklaces at once, spacing is everything. A gap of about 2 inches (5 cm) between layers, such as 16, 18 and 20 inches or 16, 20 and 24 inches, keeps each piece visible. Our guide on how to layer necklaces covers spacing, textures and pendant choice in detail.

Longer chains and fine chains are also the ones most likely to knot in a bag or a drawer. If that happens, these steps to untangle a delicate necklace will save it without stretching the links.
FAQ
What is the most popular necklace length?
For women, 18 inches (about 45 cm) is the most common length, because it falls on the collarbone and suits almost every neckline. For men, 20 to 22 inches is the most popular range for a chain worn alone.
Is a 16 or 18 inch chain better for a pendant?
An 18-inch chain is the usual choice for a pendant, since it gives the charm room to hang on the collarbone. A 16-inch chain works for a very small pendant you want to keep high, or for a neckline that sits close to the throat.
How long is a 45 cm necklace in inches?
A 45 cm necklace measures about 17.7 inches and is sold as the equivalent of an 18-inch chain. In the same way, 40 cm corresponds to 16 inches and 50 cm to 20 inches.
What length is a choker necklace?
Chokers usually measure 14 to 16 inches (about 35 to 40 cm). Some very fitted collar styles are shorter, around 12 to 13 inches, and are often worn with an extender for comfort.
What necklace length should I buy as a gift?
When you do not know the person's size, choose 18 inches for a woman and 20 or 22 inches for a man. These lengths fit the widest range of necks and necklines.
