Chokers
Close to the neck and full of character, from a fine gold chain to a row of pearls.
A choker sits high and close to the neck, drawing attention to the collarbones and the line of the shoulders. Fine and discreet or bolder and graphic, a choker necklace adds instant polish to an open neckline or a simple top.
Pearls, chains, black or rigid collar styles, in gold or silver tones: choose the choker that frames your face the way you like.
How to choose a choker
The material sets the mood. Pearls bring softness and a timeless, slightly retro elegance: our pearl choker works as well with a white shirt as with an evening dress. A metal chain is more modern and versatile; the chain choker is easy to wear every day and stacks beautifully with longer necklaces. The black choker gives a graphic contrast, while the collar necklace, a rigid open ring that rests around the neck, has a sculptural, minimalist presence.
Think about how often you will wear it: a fine chain or small pearls are easy to wear from morning to night, while a bolder collar is best kept for a statement look.
Length and fit
A choker is the shortest necklace length, usually around 14 to 16 inches, sitting at the base of the neck or slightly above. Our necklace length chart compares it with longer styles. It should rest flat against the skin without pressing: you should be able to slide a finger between the necklace and your neck. Many chokers come with an extender chain so you can adjust the fit; check the lengths on each product page. A slender neck can wear a slightly tighter choker, while a shorter neck is flattered by a fine design that sits a little lower, close to the collarbones.
Gold or silver chokers
A gold choker necklace warms the skin and highlights a tan; it pairs well with black, white, cream and earthy colors. A silver choker feels cooler and more contemporary, ideal with grey, navy and pastel shades. Match your earrings to the same tone so the face is framed by one color. Most of our pieces are made of gold-tone or silver-tone stainless steel, with a few freshwater pearl designs; the exact material is listed on each product page.
Necklines and layering
Chokers love open necklines: V-necks, square necklines, strapless tops and open shirts leave room for the necklace to show. With a crew neck, place the choker just above the collar. To layer, wear your choker as the shortest piece, then add one or two longer chains, leaving about 2 inches between each. Keep the choker the finest or the most distinctive piece of the stack, never both. Our guide on how to layer necklaces has more ideas. Take it off before sleeping and sport, and wipe it with a soft cloth; our guide on how to clean gold jewelry explains more. Discover longer styles in our necklaces collection.
